Learning Objectives

The Duke Pulmonary and Critical Care Symposium is designed to assist physicians and health care providers involved in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary disease sort through and understand recent developments in this challenging field. At the conclusion of this symposium, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify manifestations and treatment options for patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) and connective tissue diseases.
  2. Discuss the current state-of-the-art regarding the use of short- and longacting beta-agonists in asthma therapy.
  3. Discuss the latest evidence regarding the safety of inhaled beta-agonists in the treatment of asthma.
  4. Discuss the pros and cons regarding the safety of inhaled anticholinergics.
  5. Describe how to determine the cause and severity of pulmonary hypertension.
  6. Identify when oral and parenteral therapies are indicated for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
  7. Discuss how to use ICU prognostic models in the clinical setting.
  8. Describe current diagnostic approaches and treatment options for malignant pleural effusion.
